You receive an error message when you send a blank message from the Word Task Pane in Outlook

SYMPTOMS

When you open a blank message from the Microsoft Word Task Pane, and address and send the message, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Error message 1
Operation Failed.
Error message 2
An extension failed to initialize. Can't open file: extend.dat. The file may not exist, you may not have permission to open it, or it may be open in another program. Right-click the folder that contains the file, and then click Properties to check your permissions for the folder.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because Outlook does not recognize that you have an e-mail account if you cancel the Outlook Setup Wizard and then configure an e-mail account.

RESOLUTION

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a known issue. At this time, there is not an available resolution or workaround for this problem.
