How to create an unattended installation of third-party mass storage drivers in Windows 2000

SUMMARY

This article describes how to pre-install third-party mass storage drivers on the Microsoft Windows 2000 platform. This article assumes that the drivers that are supplied by the third party are using the Txtsetup.oem method for installation.

This example assumes that you are preinstalling the drivers by using a distribution folder and that the distribution folder has already been created.
1.If it does not already exist, create a $OEM$ directory under your distribution folder. For example:

X:\i386\$OEM$
2.Create a directory named TEXTMODE under the $OEM$ directory. For example:

X:\i386\$OEM$\TEXTMODE
3.Copy the driver files from the third party into this directory. This consists of a Txtsetup.oem file and at least one driver file (the .sys file), although there may be more. Copy all of the files into the TEXTMODE directory.
4.Edit the X:\i386\$OEM$\Textmode\Txtsetup.oem file by using any standard text editor such as Notepad or EDIT.
5.If you have partitioned or formatted your hard disk drive with the File Allocation Table (FAT) or FAT32 file system and you initiate setup with Winnt.exe from Disk Operating System (DOS), then configure your Txtsetup.oem like this:
[disks]
d1 = "Windows 2000 Driver Set v1.00", w2kdsk1, . <--- Note the period at the end of the line.
If you have partitioned or formatted your hard disk drive with the New Technology File System (NTFS) and you initiate Windows Setup with Winnt32.exe from within a currently-running version of Windows, then configure your Txtsetup.oem like this:
[disks]
d1 = "Windows 2000 Driver Set v1.00", w2kdsk1, \ <--- Note the backslash at the end of the line.
6.Save the file.
7.Edit the Unattend.txt file that you are using to perform your unattended installation by using any standard text editor such as Notepad or EDIT.
8.Create the following section:
[MassStorageDrivers]
"string that identifies the controller in the [scsi] section of TXTSETUP.OEM" = "OEM".

For example:

[MassStorageDrivers]
"Adaptec Ultra160 Family PCI SCSI Controller (29160, 39160, etc.)" = "OEM"

NOTE: If you also use this same unattend file on systems with IDE controllers that start using the in-box drivers, then also add the following to the [MassStorageDrivers] section, otherwise you receive an "Inaccessible Boot Device" blue screen error message during the text mode setup:

"IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2)/PCI IDE Controller" = "RETAIL"

9.Also in the Unattend.txt file, create [OEMBootFiles] and list the files that you copied into the textmode folder (in step 3) into this section. This should include an .inf, .sys, and for Windows 2000 a .cat file. For example:
[OEMBootFiles]
Driver.Sys
Driver.INF
Driver.CAT
Txtsetup.oem
10.Make sure that OemPreinstall=Yes is in the [Unattended] section of your unattend file or the drivers will not be recognized by the setup.
