Note The Office 2013 cumulative update for October 2013 contains a .com file inside each of the self-extracting .zip files. When you open a .zip file, the .com file is extracted to the same location as the hotfix executable file. When you run the .com file, it enables the Symlink settings if they are not already enabled, it runs the hotfix executable file, and then it resets the Symlink settings back to their original state. In previous cumulative update releases, you can directly run the executable file. Therefore, you can also run the executable file for the Office 2013 cumulative update for October 2013 and ignore the .com files. To avoid confusion, the .com files will not be included in future cumulative update releases.
INTRODUCTION
The cumulative update packages for October 2013 contain the latest hotfixes for Microsoft Office 2013 and for the Office 2013 servers.
We recommend that you test hotfixes before you deploy them in a production environment. Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous update package. We recommend that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains the hotfix that you need.

How to obtain the October 2013 cumulative update packages
A set of supported cumulative update packages are now available from Microsoft. However, each package is intended to correct only the applications that are listed in this article. Apply the packages only to systems that are experiencing these specific problems. If you are not severely affected by any of these problems, we recommend that you wait for the next update package that contains the hotfixes in these cumulative update packages.
Note If additional issues occur or any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request.
