Symptoms

Assume that you have Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 Release Candidate (RC) installed on Windows 8.1. When a Windows Store app project for Windows 8 is loaded by using Visual Studio 2013 RC, you see no templates in Add New Item dialog box under the Windows Store node other than the .resw resource file. Therefore, you cannot add any new Windows Store item templates to the project.

Workaround

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. In Notepad, open the Microsoft.Cpp.Props file that is located in the following folder:
    %PROGRAM FILES%\MSBuild\Microsoft.Cpp\v4.0\V120
  2. Find the following "PropertyGroup" property group:
    <PropertyGroup>
    <!-- Win8 store projects did not define ApplicationType* in the project file-->
    <Win8AppStoreProject Condition="'$(ApplicationType)' == '' and ('$(AppContainerApplication)' == 'true' or '$(WindowsAppContainer)' == 'true')">true</Win8AppStoreProject>
    </PropertyGroup>
  3. Replace the "PropertyGroup" code with the following code:
    <PropertyGroup>
    <!-- Win8 store projects did not define ApplicationType* in the project file-->
    <Win8AppStoreProject Condition="'$(ApplicationType)' == '' and ('$(AppContainerApplication)' == 'true' or '$(WindowsAppContainer)' == 'true')">true</Win8AppStoreProject>
    <AddItemTemplateGuid Condition="'$(Win8AppStoreProject)' == 'true'">{8C3FFDCC-9A63-43F2-9A3E-C45FB2ABF450}</AddItemTemplateGuid>
    </PropertyGroup>

More information

In Windows 8.1, Visual Studio 2013 RC supports the ability to maintain Windows Store apps that are designed for Windows 8.0. To enable this feature, you must install "Tools for Maintaining Store Apps for Windows 8" during setup.
