Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • A root certificate for Microsoft Lync Server 2010 or Lync Server 2013 is expired in an organization that uses internal certification authority (CA).

  • The root certificate is renewed.

  • You try to sign in to a Lync Phone Edition telephone in the Lync Server 2010 or Lync Server 2013 environment.

In this scenario, you cannot sign in to the telephone. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

Cannot sign in. Please verify your sign-in address, domain\user name, and password, and then try again. Ensure that your domain domainName was entered correctly.

Cause

This issue occurs because an operation that checks error code fails. The operation fails because the root certificate expired. Therefore, the telephone does not download the new root certificate.
