Error Messages About User Profile Appear in Several Logon Situations

SYMPTOMS

Under the following circumstances, a user may encounter several error messages that concern profiles:
  • The user account is configured to use a roaming profile.
  • The user is logging on to the domain over a slow connection, for example, by using Dial-Up Networking.
  • It is the first time that the user has logged on to the domain with a given computer.
  • The server that stores the roaming profile is unavailable.
Two error messages appear, explaining that the user profile is unavailable. After clicking OK to close each error message, the user receives a local profile. The following events appear in the Event Log:

Type: Error
Event ID: 1000
Description: Windows cannot create profile directory directory name. You will be logged on with a local profile only. Changes to the profile will not be propagated to the server. Contact your network administrator.
Source: Userenv
Type: Error
Event ID: 1000
Description: Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on using a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.
In addition, under these same circumstances but on a computer where the user has previously logged on to the domain, an error message states that the user's profile is unavailable. After receiving an error message about the server's being unavailable, the user then receives a cached profile. The following event appears in the Event Log:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.

This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

When a user is logging on over a slow connection, there should not be any attempt to get a roaming profile. Whether the server that contains the roaming profile is unavailable should not matter.
