LDAP_LOCAL_ERROR Occurs During Server Restart and LDAP Operations Do Not Work

SYMPTOMS

While a server is restarting, you may receive an error message about LDAP_LOCAL_ERROR, and LDAP operations do not succeed. Debugging the server reveals that security also does not succeed, and subsequent operations on the connection do not work.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Wldap32.DLL starts but the LDAP service does not properly bind to the directory.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

The Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) enables clients to query and manage information in a Directory Service over a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connection. The Microsoft LDAP application programming interface (API) is called Wldap32.dll.

LDAP must bind to the directory for information exchange, but this may not occur if unexpected disconnection occurs because of an unexpected shutdown or restart.
