XADM: Exchange 2000 Uses Duplicate Message ID When You Resend Message by Using Outlook

If you resend a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) mail by using Outlook (a Messaging Application Programming Interface [MAPI] client), the message ID in the SMTP mail that you resent may be the same as the message ID in the original SMTP mail.

NOTE: This behavior is different than the behavior in Exchange Server version 5.5. In Exchange Server 5.5, if you use Outlook to resend an SMTP mail, Exchange Server 5.5 uses a unique message ID for the resent message.

This problem occurs because the message ID is not modified when Outlook resends the original SMTP mail.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1.

To confirm the message ID in Outlook:

1. Open the SMTP mail that was sent from the Exchange 2000 server.
2. On the View menu, click Options, and then click Internet Header.
3. View the "Message-ID" line.
