XADM: Exchange 2000 Server Experiences Memory Leaks Because of Many Embedded MessagesArticle ID: 289775 - View products that this article applies to. This article was previously published under Q289775 SYMPTOMS
Exchange 2000 Server may experience memory leaks when Exchange 2000 processes messages that contain many embedded messages. Performance Monitor may detect these memory leaks, or, in extreme cases, excessive paging activity may be evident on the server. The server also displays a warning when Exchange 2000 is running low on virtual memory.
CAUSE
This problem can occur if the Exmime.dll file attempts to decode messages that contain many embedded messages.
RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the

STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1. MORE INFORMATION
After this fix is applied, the maximum number of embedded messages that are allowed is 16 times the configured nesting-level limit. The nesting-level limit is controlled by the LimitNestingLevels registry value. This value is located under the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIs\Parame
tersSystem\InternetContent
If the LimitNestingLevels registry value is not defined, the default value of 30 nesting levels is used. Therefore, the default value for the number of embedded messages is 16 multiplied by 30, which equals 480.
