SYMPTOMS

When you try to delete more than 4,000 messages at one time, you may receive one of the following error messages:
There is not enough memory available to perform the operation
Some items could not be deleted. They were either moved or already deleted, or access was denied.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Outlook can handle a bulk deletion of no more than 4,000 messages when it is working with a server message store.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, delete fewer than 4,000 messages in a single operation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
