OL2002: UUEncode Attachment Appears as Text Within Body of Message Sent to SMTP Address

SYMPTOMS

When you send a message to a Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) address, and the message has an Outlook item, such as a Contact or another message, that is attached in UUEncode attachment format, the attachment may appear as text within the body of the message rather than as an attachment.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, specify a different attachment encoding type for a single message or for all plain text messages.

To specify the attachment format for a single message:
  1. Start Outlook, and then click New.
  2. Type the e-mail address of an SMTP account in the To box.
  3. On the View menu, click Options. (If you are using Word as your e-mail editor, click the Options toolbar button.)
  4. Click Default or MIME in the Attachment format list.

To change the attachment format for all plain text messages:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab.
  2. Under Message Format, click Internet Formatting.
  3. Click to select the check box for Encode attachments in UUENCODE format when sending a plain text message.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
