SYMPTOMS

Whenever you run the Outlook OST Integrity Checker tool (Scanost.exe) in Microsoft Outlook, the tool scans all folders. This makes the process take a long time.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

The default behavior is for Scanost.exe to scan all offline folders. In Microsoft Outlook 2000, Scanost.exe scans only folders that are really offline. However, in Microsoft Outlook 2002 and in later versions of Outlook, all folders are "offline" by default. Therefore, the tool synchronizes every folder to the OST, regardless of whether the folder has been synchronized before. This process can take a long time over a dial-up connection.
