Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a mobile broadband module or adapter installed on a Windows 8.1-based computer.

  • The module or adapter uses an access point name (APN) to connect to the Internet.

  • You first connect to an APN that uses Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to obtain an IP address and a default gateway.

  • You disconnect from the APN and then connect to another APN that does not use DHCP (such as a device-configured APN) to obtain an IP address and default gateway.

After you connect to the second APN, you cannot access the Internet.

Cause

This problem occurs because the IP address and gateway that were assigned by DHCP in the first APN connection is incorrectly retained in the second APN connection. This behavior occurs because the DHCP information is handled incorrectly in the Wmbclass.sys driver.

Resolution

Windows 8.1 file information and notesImportant Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Blue RTM" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
