You receive a "The server application, source file, or item cannot be found" error message when you attempt to work with an object in Word 2003 or Word 2002

When you attempt to work with an object in a Microsoft Word document, you may receive the following error message:

This error message occurs for one of the following reasons. Please see the "Resolution" section for the resolution that applies to your situation:

• You are trying to edit an MS Organization Chart 2.0 Object
• You are editing an object whose program was deleted, moved, or renamed

The Office Organization Chart (OCXP) tool does not support all of the groupings and formatting supported by the legacy MS Organization Chart 2.0 (OC2) application and the automatic formatting and layout features are designed more for creating and delivering simple charts for on-screen viewing.

You are trying to edit an MS Organization Chart 2.0 Object

When you click OK to the error message listed in the "Error Message" section of this article, you receive the following message: This problem can occur if you are editing a Word document that contains an MS Organization Chart 2.0 object on a computer that does not have MS Organization Chart 2.0 installed. MS Organization Chart was installed by some earlier versions of Microsoft Word. MS Organization Chart is not installed with Microsoft Office Word 2003 and Microsoft Word 2002, because the feature was incorporated into the Diagram Gallery.

Method 1: Use the Microsoft Word Drawing Tools

To use the drawing tools in Word to edit your Organization Chart, follow these steps:

1. Select the MS Organization Chart object, and then press CTRL+SHIFT+F9. This unlinks the object from its association with the MS Organization Chart 2.0 program and converts the object to a picture.
2. Right-click the picture, and then click Edit Picture on the shortcut menu. The picture (Organization Chart) now appears within the Drawing Canvas of Word.
3. Use the Drawing toolbar to make changes to your Organization Chart, as needed. If the Drawing toolbar is not displayed, point to Toolbars on the View menu, and then click Drawing.

Method 2: Use the Diagram Gallery

Create a new organization chart in your Office XP program similar to the existing organization chart that was created in the earlier version of the Office program. Delete the old Organization Chart from your file.

Method 3: Disable Chart Conversion and Reinstall Organization Chart 2.0

You are editing an object whose program was deleted, moved, or renamed

The program with which the object is associated is missing.

For example, when you double-click a bitmap image object in a Word document, and the Microsoft Windows Paint program was removed, you receive the error message.

To resolve this problem, you must reinstall the missing program.
