Template added to "Templates and Add-ins" list is not loaded upon restart of Word

When you add a template to the Templates and Add-ins list in Microsoft Word, the check box for the template may not remain selected. Therefore, the template is not automatically loaded when you restart Word.


This behavior can occur because the template must reside in the Word Startup folder to be automatically loaded when you start Word.


To resolve this issue, move or copy the template to the Word Startup folder. To do this, use one of the following methods, as appropriate for the version of Word that you are running.

Microsoft Office Word 2007

The default location for the Word 2007 Startup folder is as follows:
  • In Microsoft Windows XP and in Microsoft Windows Server 2003:
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP
  • In Windows Vista:
NoteUsername is a placeholder for your logon name.

Microsoft Word 2002

The default location for the Word 2002 Startup folder is as follows:
  • In Microsoft Windows 98 and in Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) without profiles enabled:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup
  • In Windows 98 and in Windows Me with profiles enabled, or in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0:
    C:\Windows\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup
  • In Microsoft Windows 2000:
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup
NoteUsername is a placeholder for your logon name.
