SYMPTOMS

When you save a Microsoft Word 2002 document as Word 6.0/95, you may receive the following error message:
There is not enough memory or disk space to convert this document.
When you click OK, the file is not saved. However, if you save the document as Word Document, you can save the document without receiving the error message.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the document contains a Table of Contents Entry (TC) field that is incorrectly formatted. For example, you may receive the error message if you type the slash mark for a switch but omit the letter that designates the switch.

The TC field uses the following syntax:
{TC "text" switches}
where "text" is the text you want to appear in the Table of Contents and switches indicates how you want the table of contents entry to be treated.

The following example is incorrectly formatted:
{TC "text" \ }

RESOLUTION

Check the TC fields in your document, and correct any that are incorrectly formatted. To see the TC fields, make sure hidden text is displayed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

For more information about the TC field, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type TC field in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topic.
