In Windows 8.1, a deadlock between two threads on a file control block (FCB) resource for the TXF log may occur.

Specifically, assume that one thread is defragmenting the Master File Table (MFT) and has initiated a flush of the TXF log and is waiting for it to complete, while the other thread is flushing the TXF log and is waiting for the FCB. In this situation, a deadlock issue occurs.

When the deadlock occurs, the operating system freezes and requires a hard reset in order to recover.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a bug in the Ntfs.sys driver.

Windows RT 8.1 or Windows 8.1 file information notes

  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:

    Version

    Product

    Milestone

    Service branch

    6.3.920 0.16 xxx

Windows RT 8.1 and Windows 8.1

    RTM

    GDR

  • GDR service branches contain only those fixes that are widely released to address widespread, critical issues. LDR service branches contain hotfixes in addition to widely released fixes.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
