Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

  • You create an environment variable, and you set it to %APPDATA% or %LOCALAPPDATA%.

  • You run the Set command from a command prompt to query the environment variable. For example, if you had set the value to %APPDATA%, you can see the following query result:

    UserVariableName=C:\Users\UserFolder\AppData\Roaming

  • Applications on the computer make some changes to system parameters so that a WM_SETTINGCHANGE message is sent to the top-level windows.

  • You open a new command prompt window, and then run the Set command again.

In this scenario, you receive the following result:

UserVariableName=%APPDATA%
