In Microsoft Word documents that are based on templates with customized outline numbering styles, the tab or indent settings (or both) may be unexpectedly changed.
Specifically, either or both of the following may occur in the document:
This behavior occurs when you click to select the Automatically update document styles check box, or when you open a document in which this check box is already selected.
Tow work around this issue, follow these steps:
Method 1: Reset the Outline Numbering Scheme in the Document
Method 2: Use the Organizer to Manually Copy the Style (or Styles) from the Template to the DocumentFor more information about how to copy styles by using the organizer, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type styles, copy in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
The behavior described in the "Symptoms" section of this article is intermittent and can be difficult to reproduce. The document is incorrectly modified when it is updated from the template by means of the Automatically update document styles feature.
