OL2002: How to Troubleshoot Invalid Page Faults (IPF) in the Outllib.dll File

This article discusses how to troubleshoot Invalid Page Faults (IPF) in Outllib.dll if the following error message occurs:

The methods that are described below begin with the easiest and most likely fixes, and progress to the more difficult fixes.

The following are the troubleshooting methods that are discussed in this article:

• How to rename the Outcmd.dat file.
• How to disable extensions.
• How to start in Safe mode.
• How to create a new profile and personal folders (.pst) file.
• How to reinstall Outlook.
• How to turn off Microsoft Word as your e-mail editor.

How to Rename the Outcmd.dat File

If the IPF occurs when you start Outlook, locate the Outcmd.dat file, rename it to Outcmd.old, and then restart Outlook. To so this:

1. Quit Outlook.
2. Click Start, point to Find (or Search), and then click Files or Folders.
3. In Search for Files or Folders Named box, type outcmd.dat.
4. Click to select the Include subfolders, click to select My Computer, and then click Find Now.
5. In the Results pane, select the file.
6. On the File menu, click Rename. Change the file extension from .dat to .old, and then click ENTER.
7. On the File menu, click Close.
8. Start Outlook.

Outcmd.dat stores any custom changes that you make to your toolbar buttons. If the behavior was solved when you renamed this file, you must recreate any toolbar customizations.

How to Disable Extensions

Outlook may have problems with incompatible or invalid extension information. Extensions may cause Outlook to not start or create IPFs while it is running. Use the information in this section to troubleshoot extension problems.

If Outlook Does Not Start

If Outlook does not start, replace the Extend.dat file. This file caches extension information that is gathered from the Microsoft Windows registry. Use the following steps to replace the Extend.dat file:

1. Quit all programs.
2. Click Start, point to Find (or Search), and then click Files or Folders.
3. In Search for Files or Folders Named box, type extend.dat.
4. In the Look In box, click to select your hard disk.
5. Click to select Include Subfolders, and then click Find Now.
6. In the Results pane, select the file.
7. On the File menu, click Rename. Change the file extension from dat to old, and then click ENTER.
8. On the File menu, click Close.
9. Restart Outlook. A new Extend.dat file is created when you restart Outlook.

If Outlook Does Start

If you can start Outlook and you suspect an extension problem, use the following steps to disable extensions:

1. Start Outlook.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Other tab.
3. Click Advanced Options, and then click Add-In Manager.
4. In the Add-in box, click to clear the check box for the add-in that you suspect is causing the behavior.
5. Click OK three.

Method 3: Start in Safe Mode

Start Outlook with the /Safe command-line switch. This causes Outlook to load without COM Add-ins and extensions. Safe mode disables the programs that start automatically. How to Create a New Profile and Personal Folders (PST) File

1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, double-click the Mail icon.
3. In the Mail Setup dialog box, click the Show Profiles button.
4. On the General tab, click Add.
5. In the Profile Name box, type a descriptive name for the new profile, and then click OK.
6. In the E-mail Accounts dialog box, click Add a new email account, and then click Next.
7. Select the type of server that your new e-mail account will work with, and then click Finish.
8. Click Close.

Make sure you specify a new personal folders (.pst) file and do not use the existing file when the wizard prompts you.

NOTE: Because you are not using the old .pst file while you are troubleshooting, you will not see any of your old .pst folders or files.

How to Reinstall Outlook

Rename the Outllib.dll file and reinstall it to repair the Outlook installation.

How to Rename the Outllib.dll File

1. On the Start menu, point to Find (or Search), and then click Files or Folders.
2. In Search for Files or Folders Named box, type Outllib.dll.
3. In the Look In box, click to select your hard disk.
4. Click to select Include Subfolders, and then click Find Now.
5. In the Results pane, select the file.
6. On the File menu, click Rename. Change the file extension from dat to old and click ENTER.
7. On the File menu, click Close.

How to Reinstall Outlook

1. 
   
2. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
3. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
4. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click to select Microsoft Office XP, and then click Add/Remove.
5. In the Maintenance Wizard, click Repair Office.
6. Click Repair errors in my Office XP installation, and then click Finish.
7. When the Maintenance Wizard is complete, click OK, and then restart Outlook.

How to Turn Off Word as the E-mail Editor

1. On the Outlook Tools menu, click Options.
2. On the Mail Format tab, click to clear the Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages check box.
3. Click OK to save and close the Options.
