SYMPTOMS

If you run the Application Center 2000 Add Cluster Member Wizard to add a server to a cluster, after you click finish, the Wizard may fail and display the error message:
0x80070057

One or more parameters or arguments are incorrect.

The parameter is incorrect. (0x80070057)
Note that the error message does not identify the specific problem that you need to correct.

CAUSE

Application Center 2000 returns this general error message instead a more descriptive message indicating the actual source of the problem.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, upgrade to Application Center 2000 Service Pack (SP) 1. For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
309384 INFO: How to Obtain the Latest Application Center 2000 Service Pack

Workaround

Check the static IP addresses assigned to your front-end network interface card (NIC) and make sure that you have the same IP subnet mask as you have on the cluster controller's front-end NIC and that the static IP address (if any) assigned to the front-end NIC does not match any of the IP addresses assigned to the cluster controller's front-end NIC.

You must not assign any static IP addresses to the front-end NIC on a server that you intend to add to this cluster or you must recreate the cluster with at least two static IP addresses on the front-end NIC of the cluster controller.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This bug was corrected in Application Center 2000 Service Pack (SP) 1.

MORE INFORMATION

Three possible reasons for this error are:
  • You have an IP subnet mask on the front end (load-balanced) network interface card (NIC) on the server that you are trying to add that does not match the subnet mask on the other cluster members.
  • You have assigned the cluster IP or virtual IP address to a front-end NIC on the server that you are trying to add.
  • Your cluster does not use dedicated IP (DIP) addresses and you have assigned a static IP address to the front-end NIC on the server that you are trying to add. If you assigned a single static IP address to the front-end NIC on the cluster controller when you created the cluster, you created a cluster that does not use DIP addresses.
NOTE: There may be other configuration problems that also cause this error.

Application Center 2000 SP1 replaces the error message cited in the "Symptoms" section with more descriptive messages that indicate the specific nature of the problem.
