While you are editing a Microsoft Word 2002 document, Word stops responding (hangs), or you receive the following error message:

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:

•	The document has line numbering turned on. -and-
•	The line numbers in the left margin are formatted with a character style that is different from the default Line Number character style.

Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

To work around this issue, format the line numbers in the left margin using the normal character style. To do this, follow these steps:

1.	In the Word document, type test. Select the typed text, and then in the Style box (on the Formatting toolbar), click Normal.
2.	With the text still selected, click Styles and Formatting on the Format menu.
3.	Move the mouse pointer over Line Number in the Pick formatting to apply list, click the arrow to the right of Line Number, and then click Update to Match Selection.
4.	Delete the extra text ("test") that you typed.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3.

To recover a program or document that is not responding, follow these steps:

1.	Click Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office Application Recovery.
2.	In the Application list, click the program or document that is not responding.
3.	Do one of the following: • To attempt to recover the files you were working on, click Recover Application. • If you just want to quit the program, and lose recent changes to the files, click End Application.
4.	The error that caused the problem can be reported to Microsoft for use in improving future versions of the program. Click Send Error Report or Don't Send.
