Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install an application in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.

  • You upgrade the operating system to Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2.

  • You start the application by clicking the desktop shortcut.

  • A Program Compatibility Assistant dialog box appears that indicates that you should reinstall the application. Then, you select the Don't show this message again and run the app anyway check box to dismiss the dialog box.

  • You exit the application.

  • You try to start the application again by clicking the desktop shortcut.

In this scenario, the application is not started, and you receive no UI indication.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the update for KB2923528.
