SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to send a worksheet in e-mail from Microsoft Excel, Excel appears to stop responding.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you are running both Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Excel at the same time, and you do the following:
  1. In Excel, you point to Send To on the File menu, and then click Mail Recipient.
  2. You attempt to send the worksheet to an e-mail address that is not recognized by Outlook.
The mouse pointer changes to an hourglass while Excel waits for you to respond to the Check Names dialog box in Outlook. Because this dialog box appears in an Outlook window, instead of in your Excel window, Excel appears to stop responding.

NOTE: This problem only occurs if Outlook is already running when you attempt to send the e-mail.

WORKAROUND

Click the Microsoft Outlook button on the Windows taskbar to switch to Outlook, and respond to the Check Names dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
