Image does not appear in thumbnail view after removing Office

SYMPTOMS

When you view the thumbnail of an image file in Microsoft Windows Explorer or the Open dialog box of a Microsoft Office program, the thumbnail image is not displayed.

CAUSE

This problem can occur in the following situation:
  • You install Microsoft Office 2000 or Microsoft Office XP on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer.
  • You configure Microsoft Photo Editor to run from the computer during the Office 2000 Setup.
  • You remove Photo Editor from your computer. This problem can occur unexpectedly when you remove your existing Office installation from the computer, either by running Setup and selecting Remove All, or by upgrading to a later version of Office.
  • You view a JPEG File Interchange Format (.jpg) image, or a Graphic Interchange Format (.gif) image in Thumbnail view.
Note The problem occurs when you remove the Office Shared Tool Photo Editor. The Photo Editor removes the operating system registry keys that are described in the "Workaround" section. Photo Editor is one of the Office shared tools and is installed with the Office Suites and the individual Office programs.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, add the ShellEx keys and the corresponding values for the image files to the Windows Registry. To do this, follow these steps.

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. In Registry Editor, expand the following subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes
  3. Click .gif.
  4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  5. In the New Key #1 box, type ShellEx, and then press ENTER.
  6. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  7. In the New Key #1 box, type the following:
    {BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
    Note Include the braces in the above key name.

    Note The above key name contains zeros, and not the letter O.
  8. Press ENTER.
  9. In the right pane, right-click Default, and then click Modify on the shortcut menu.
  10. In the Value data box, type the following:
    {7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}
    Note Include the braces in the above value.

    Note The above value contains zeros, and not the letter O.
  11. Click OK.
  12. In the folder list, click .jpeg.
  13. Follow steps 5 through 12 to add the same keys and value to the .jpeg registry key.
  14. In the folder list, click .jpg.
  15. Follow steps 5 through 12 to add the same keys and value to the .jpgregistry key.
  16. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

MORE INFORMATION

When you remove Photo Editor from Office 2000 or Office XP on a Windows 2000-based computer, the following images may no longer appear in Thumbnail view:
Graphic Interchange Format (.gif)
Joint Photographic Experts Group (.jpg, .jpeg)
Windows Bitmap (.bmp) image files do appear in Thumbnail view.
