Outlook 2000 Windows Messaging profiles are created incorrectly when you install Office 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Custom Installation Wizard and the Office Profile Wizard to install Office 2000, some Outlook 2000 Windows Messaging profiles may be created incorrectly. Existing settings, including locations and names of personal folder (.pst) files, Personal Address Books (.pab files), offline storage (.ost) files, and Favorites (.fav files), may be missing or incorrect.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when the Office profile setting (OPS) file contains settings for .pst, .pab, .ost, and .fav files. These settings in the Office profile setting file behave like a messaging profile. These settings are added when the Office profile setting file is used during an Office 2000 installation.

If the installation of Office 2000 is an upgrade to Microsoft Outlook 2000 from a Microsoft Exchange Server client, from Microsoft Outlook 97, or from Microsoft Outlook 98, the messaging profile in the Office profile setting file replaces the existing Windows Messaging profile.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use the Modify Profile utility (Modprof.exe) to correctly update Windows Messaging profiles when you upgrade to Outlook 2000. To obtain the Modify Profile utility, see the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/appndx/toolbox.htm#outladm (http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/appndx/toolbox.htm#outladm)

Before you create the Office profile setting file, you can work around these potential problems by editing the Proflwiz.ini file. The following is a sample Proflwiz.ini file that excludes the personal settings:

PROFLWIZ.INI

Extend.dat
OutlPrnt
*.rwz
*.nick
*.tmp
*.OST

<AppData>\Microsoft\Outlook\*.FAV
<AppData>\Microsoft\Word\*.asd
<AppData>\Microsoft\Word\*.wbk
