Downloading SMTP Messages Through NNTP Causes Database Fragmentation

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) protocols and services that are included in Windows 2000, downloading Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) messages of only average size may cause the database to become fragmented. This can eventually affect server performance.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.

This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
