This article describes the improvements and resolved issues that are introduced in the March 2014 update for Microsoft Lync Room System. 

Note This is a republished version for March 2014 Lync Room System update. This republished update resolves the issues that occur when you install the update from a factory image, or when you install the update on a Lync Room System device that lost the password.

Introduction

This update introduces the following improvements:

  • Adds support for administrator to specify multiple user input languages, and for users to switch between the administrator-defined input language and input method editors (IMEs).

  • Adds System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) manageability.

  • Improvements to Narrator and High Contrast accessibility options.

  • Adds support for Lync licensing and activation.

  • Performance improvements when a user joins large meetings.

  • Adds informative illustrations to the on-screen device tutorial.

  • Improves the user experience when an incoming call or meeting invitation is presented during on-screen keyboard use.

Additionally, this update resolves the issues that occur in the following scenarios.

Scenario 1

Assume that you have a Microsoft Lync meeting that was scheduled by using Outlook Web Access. In this situation, you cannot join the meeting.

Scenario 2

Assume that you install an update for Microsoft Lync Room System that is dated January 2014. In this situation, Lync Room System freezes. Additionally, the system is unrecoverable, and you have to restart the Lync Room System device.

The update also resolves the following issues and the issues that are described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) articles:

  • Fixes the bugs that may cause UI animations to render.

  • Fixes an issue in which menus appear in various positions.

  • Fixes an issue in which some search result items are duplicated.

  • Fixes an issue in which the meeting countdown does not appear or displays an incorrect value.

  • Fixes a whiteboard first-touch issue.

  • 2929206 Recurring meeting isn't displayed in the calendar of a Lync Room System room

  • 2941651 New meeting does not show up when using Lync Room System with Office 365 mailbox

  • 2953650 Lync Room System is stuck and you cannot sign in while you install a March 2014 update

How to install the update

To install the update for Lync Room System, use the following method:

Note To use System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) to monitor the health of Lync Room System, you must join Lync Room System to the domain before you install the update. To do this, follow the steps that are described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article:

2933446 If you run System Center Operations Manager 2012, join Lync Room System to the domain before you install the June 2014 or April 2014 update

To install an update on a Lync Room System device that has Internet access, follow these steps:

  1. Log on to Lync Room System in administrator mode by using administrator credentials. To restart Lync Room System in administrator mode, follow these steps:

    1. Select Options in meeting mode at the pre-meeting screen.

    2. Select Settings to display a prompt for credentials.

    3. Enter administrator credentials at the prompt to restart Lync Room System in administrator mode.

    4. At the Windows logon screen, enter administrator credentials to display the LRS Admin Console.

  2. Click the Web Updates tab.

  3. Under Microsoft updates, select Download from Microsoft Update server.

  4. Under OEM updates, select Download from OEM server.

  5. Under Update frequency, select the Automatic updates check box to update automatically during the daily maintenance time.

  6. Click Apply and Restart to save your changes.

Note If you change any settings and want to apply updates manually, follow these steps:

  1. Click Apply & Restart.

  2. Restart LRS and then log on to LRS in administrator mode by using administrator credentials.

  3. Click the Web Updates tab again.

  4. Select Check Updates and Install.

  5. Click OK to restart LRS when you are prompted.


To install an update on a Lync Room System device that does not have Internet access, follow these steps:

Note Before you install the update, you must have an HTTP server that Lync Room System has access to. For more information, go to the "How to set up an HTTP server in Windows Server 2012 R2" section.

  1. Download the public update manifest to your Virtual Directory’s physical folder from one of the following OEM (the manufacturer of your Lync Room System) links. The OEM may require the physical folder to be a specific folder in a folder structure.

  2. To extract the update manifest to the folder, follow these steps:

    1. At the command prompt, direct to the physical folder by using the cd command.

    2. Run one of the following commands for the corresponding OEM to extract LyncRoomUpdates.xml to the physical folder.

      • CrestronLyncRoomUpdates.exe LyncRoomUpdates.xml

      • SmartLyncRoomUpdates.exe LyncRoomUpdates.xml

      • PolycomLyncRoomUpdates.exe LyncRoomUpdates.xml

    3. Run the LyncRoomUpdates.xml command to view the contents of the update manifest.

  3. Download all files in the update manifest to the physical folder.

    Notes

    • If the XML entry contains a link, go to the link to download the file. The file must be named the same as the FileName attribute.

    • If the XML entry has the IsFwLink attribute set to True, add the file name to the end of the web address to download the file.

  4. Connect Lync Room System to a network by using an account that has access that is to your internal HTTP server.

  5. Log on to Lync Room System in administrator mode by using administrator credentials.

  6. Click the Web Updates tab.

  7. Under Microsoft updates, select a Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) server.

  8. Under OEM updates, select Download from internal server.

  9. Under Update frequency, select the Automatic updates check box to update automatically during the daily maintenance time.

Note If you change any settings and want to apply updates manually, follow these steps:

  1. Click Apply & Restart.

  2. Restart Lync Room System, and then log on to Lync Room System in administrator mode by using administrator credentials.

  3. Click the Web Updates tab again.

  4. Select Check Updates and Install.

  5. Click OK to restart Lync Room System when you are prompted.


To set up an HTTP server to download the update files for Lync Room System that does not have Internet access in Windows Server 2012 R2, follow these steps:

  1. Add the Web Server (IIS) role in Windows Server 2012 R2.

  2. Click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager in Server Manager\Tools.

  3. In IIS Manager, open the tree for your HTTP server, and then expand the Sites node.

  4. Right-click the Sites node, and then select Add Virtual Directory. Create a name for access by using IP address\Name. Select the physical path of the folder on a disk where you will download the Lync Room System public update manifest and associate files.

    Note The OEM may require the physical folder to be a specific folder in a folder structure. Therefore, you must select the extracted OEM root directory as your physical path, and then follow the OEM instructions for the file path you should specify in the following location:LRS Admin Console > Web Updates > Download from internal server text box

  5. After you download the files, make sure that the server will serve all files correctly by visiting each address, such as IP address\Name\File.extension.

    Note If a file is not served, add a MIME type for the file in IIS Manager.

Restart requirementYou must restart the Lync Room System device after you install this update.
