DHCP-Enabled WINS Client May Refresh Netbt Name Cache Frequently

SYMPTOMS

When a DHCP-enabled WINS client performs a name registration with WINS, it gets a Time To Live (TTL) value. In certain conditions, after the first refresh cycle occurs (at TTL/2) or when a nbtstat -RR command is issued, clients may refresh the name cache very frequently.

CAUSE

After the first refresh cycle occurs or when the nbtstat -RR command is issued, the WINS client starts to refresh every 10 minutes. This causes the load on the WINS server to increase and causes the WINS server to enter "burst" mode and give lower TTL values to all the clients, even for new name registrations.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
