SYMPTOMS

When processing all shared dimensions in an Analysis Services database, the processing may fail or Analysis Services may stop responding (hang) during the commit phase of the processing. During the processing, you may also see that Very Large Dimension (VLDM) is invoked as one of the steps in the Process window. This may occur while processing with Data Transformation Services (DTS) or inside of Analysis Manager.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (the Analysis Services Components - Sql2kasp1.exe). For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
290211  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290211/EN-US/ ) INF: How to Obtain the Latest SQL Server 2000 Service Pack

WORKAROUND

Process each shared dimension individually instead of trying to process all dimensions from Analysis Manager. When you set up a DTS package with a task that processes all dimensions, split the task into several tasks with each task set to process one dimension.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services version 8.0. This problem was first corrected in the Analysis Services Components of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1.
