OAER: Publisher Stops Responding Opening RTF File from Word

ERROR SIGNATURE

This article describes a problem in which Microsoft Outlook unexpectedly quits (crashes) with the following error signature:

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Publisher 2002, when you open a file saved in Rich Text Format (RTF), you may receive the following error message, and Publisher stops responding (hangs). You will not be able to recover the file that you were trying open.
Microsoft Publisher has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature similar to the error listed at the beginning of this article.

Note This problem does not occur with all RTF files.

CAUSE

The RTF converter that is installed by Publisher 2002 is not able to identify some object properties. This problem can occur if the following conditions are true:
A picture was inserted by pasting it multiple times.
The pictures are not separated by a character or a space.
This problem most often occurs in files saved from Microsoft Word 2002 in Rich Text Format *.rtf.

WORKAROUND

Method 1: Convert the RTF file to Word Document Format

1.Start or switch to Microsoft Word.
2.Open the RTF file.
3.On the File menu, click Save As.
4.In the Save as type list, click Word Document (*.doc).
5.Click Save.

Method 2: Add Spaces Between Each Picture

1.Start or switch to Microsoft Word.
2.Open the RTF file.
3.Click between the two pictures and press the SPACEBAR. Repeat this step as needed.
4.On the File menu, click Save.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

The Office Error Reporting dialog box appears when an error occurs that results in a fatal event in the program. The dialog box includes a button to send the information about the fatal event to Microsoft. Microsoft gathers information about these types of events in a database to try to identify the cause.
