FIX: Server Fails with Query to Cube with Multiple Partitions and Distinct Count Measure

SYMPTOMS

When you query a cube that has multiple partitions, aggregations stored by way of ROLAP or HOLAP, and a Distinct Count Measure, you may receive the following error in the Windows Event Viewer for the Analysis Services service:
Unexpected fatal error occurred. Attempting to restart server.
The client then receives an error such as the following:
Connection to the server is lost.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (the Analysis Services Components - Sql2kasp1.exe). For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

This problem will not occur if you have only one partition or if your server has more then one processor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services version 8.0. This problem was first corrected in the Analysis Services Components of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1.
