SYMPTOMS

Non-Plug and Play (PnP) devices are no longer supported in Windows XP. This may include modems and Network Interface Cards (NIC).

In addition, if a modem that is slower than 28.8 kilobits per second (Kbps), that modem is not recognized automatically by Microsoft Windows XP. The Control Panel Add/Remove Hardware tool does not recognize the modem.

CAUSE

Non-Plug and Play (PnP) devices are no longer supported.

For modems slower than 28.8 kilobits, native drivers are not included with Windows XP.

RESOLUTION

If the device is Plug-and-Play capable, consult the manufacturer about how to put the device into the appropriate mode.

To work around non-detected modems, download the appropriate drivers from the modem manufacturer and manually install them according to manufacturers directions.
