XCLN: Instant Messaging Time-Out Period Can Be Changed

The Microsoft Exchange Server Instant Messaging time-out period is 20 minutes. The client computer waits the predefined time of 20 minutes before the server checks the status of the client and marks the contact as unavailable. This article describes a new feature that allows you to change the timeout period.

The new feature is included in the Instant Messaging update, Mmssetup.exe, which includes the updated files Msimmsgr.dll and Msimnetc.dll, build 6.0.4813.0. To use this feature, add the following key to the registry:

1. Install the updated files.
2. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
3. Locate and click the following key in the registry:
   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Messenger\Profiles
4. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
   Value name: PropertyTimeout
   Data type: REG_DWORD
   
   NOTE: Profiles is the correct location; the value should not be created under any of the user-specific profiles.
   
   
5. Quit Registry Editor.

The new feature defines the client property refresh period in seconds. This registry value is read when client logs on and is cached. Changes made to this value take effect on next logon session.
