FIX: OLAP Service Fails to Start After Changing Sort Order to Binary on Japanese Windows

After you change the sort order to binary on a Japanese-enabled Windows 2000 Server or a localized version of Japanese Windows 2000 Server or Windows NT, the following error message may be displayed when you stop and restart the Analysis Services service:

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (the Analysis Services Components - Sql2kasp1.exe). For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services version 8.0. This problem was first corrected in the Analysis Services Components of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

NOTE: The sort order setting is only available if Analysis Services Manager is running on a Japanese-enabled Windows 2000 Server or a localized version of Japanese Windows 2000 Server or Windows NT.

1. Start Analysis Manager.
2. Right-click the server name, click Properties, and then click the Processing tab.
3. Change Sort Order from Case-Sensitive to Binary.
4. Stop and then restart the Analysis Services service.
