WD97: Incorrect Number of Misspelled Words When You Check Spelling

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to check the spelling of your Word document, Word may indicate an incorrect number of misspelled words.

NOTE: This problem can also occur if you use a macro to check the spelling of your Word document.

For more information about an example macro to check spelling of your Word document, from the Visual Basic Editor, click Contents and Index on the Help menu, click the Index tab in Microsoft Word Help, type the following text
spellingerrors
and then double-click the selected text to go to the "SpellingErrors Property" topic. If you are unable to find the information you need, ask the Office Assistant.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the misspelled word or words contain characters that are not letters; for example, an asterisk (*), a less-than sign (<), or a greater-than sign (>).

RESOLUTION

To resolve the problem described in this article, obtain and install the latest Microsoft Word 97 update from the following Microsoft Web site:

IMPORTANT NOTE: Microsoft Word 97 post-service release fixes are cumulative. The latest update contains all of the fixes since Service Release 2. If you install the latest update for Word 97, you do not need to install any other updates after Service Release 2.
