The CD-RW Drive May Be Assigned Two Drive Letters in My Computer

SYMPTOMS

If you right-click My Computer, click Manage, click Disk Management, and then change a drive letter of a CD-RW drive, the My Computer name space may not display the proper changes. Instead, two CD-RW drives (the previous CD-RW drive letter and the new CD-RW driver letter) may be displayed.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, close My Computer, and then reopen it so that the view is updated. The new drive letter assignments are now properly displayed in My Computer.

CAUTION: Do not attempt to use the previous CD-RW drive. If you attempt to burn data to the previous (non-existent) drive, the data is copied to a null object pointer. If you move files to the staging area, you may incur data loss.

To change a drive letter:

Right click My Computer.
Click Manage.
Click Disk Management.
Right-click the CD-RW drive.
Click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
Click Change.
Click the drive letter.
Click OK.
If you had My Computer open before you started these steps, ensure that you close it, and then reopen it to view the updated drive letter.
