Add Network Place Wizard Saves the location http://<server> as \\<server> in a network shortcut

On your My Network Places list, when you add a shortcut to a server, the Add Network Place Wizard may save the location as \\server instead of as http://server.

This problem can occur because Windows XP reads the location as a universal naming convention (UNC) path and therefore uses UNC notation for the shortcut.

To work around this problem, disable the WebClient service on the computer on which you are creating the shortcut. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
2. In the details pane, double-click Services and Applications.
3. Double-click Services.
4. Right-click WebClient, and then click Properties.
5. On the General tab, click Disabled in the Startup type list.
6. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Note If you have to modify or to write files on a Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) server, re-enable the WebClient service after you create the shortcut.
