In-Place eDiscovery preview isn't available for items in inactive Exchange Online mailboxes

Problem

When you try to preview the results of an In-Place eDiscovery search in Exchange Online, message previews are not displayed when you select items in inactive mailboxes. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

Your request couldn't be completed. Please try again.

Workaround

To work around this issue, copy the results of the search to the discovery mailbox, and then view the results from that mailbox.

Status

This is a known issue. We're working to address this issue and will post more information in this article when that information becomes available.
