We recommend that you upgrade to Windows Media Player 9.

Microsoft ended all support for Windows Media Player 7.1, including security updates, on April 14, 2009. We recommend that customers who are still running Windows Media Player 7.1 on Windows 2000 upgrade to Windows Media Player 9 as soon as possible.

According to the Microsoft Support Lifecycle policy, Windows Media Player 9 is currently supported on the following operating systems:
  • Windows Media Player 9 on Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Windows Media Player 9 on Windows 2000 Professional
  • Windows Media Player 9 on Windows 2000 Server
  • Windows Media Player 9 on Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition
  • Windows Media Player 9 on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
  • Windows Media Player 9 on Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
  • Windows Media Player 9 on Windows Server 2003 Web Edition
  • Windows Media Player 9 on Windows XP Home Edition
  • Windows Media Player 9 on Windows XP Professional
