SYMPTOMS

When you click Actions, and then click Call Contact, you may receive the following error message:
An internal error occurred in the automatic phone dialer. Close the phone dial dialog box, and then open it again.

CAUSE

The Connect Using field under Dialing Options is set to either IPCONF Line or H323 protocol. Outlook 2000 does not support the full functionality of the Microsoft Windows 2000 Telephony Application Programming Interface (TAPI) 3.0 driver. It only works with the Unimodem 5 Service provider and an analog modem device.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, specify Call Using NetMeeting or in the Dialing Options, under Connect Using, click Modem. To Specify Call Using Netmeeting, perform the following steps:
  1. In the Contacts folder, click a contact.
  2. On the Details tab, type the relevant information in the Directory server and E-mail alias boxes.
  3. Click the Actions menu, and then click Call Using NetMeeting.
