Install the Logical Disk Counter in System Monitor

1. Click Start click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
2. Type diskperf -yv and then press ENTER to enable the disk performance counters for logical drives or storage volumes.
3. Restart the computer to load the LogicalDisk counters.

Configure an Alert in System Monitor to Track Free Disk Space

1. Click Start, click Run, type perfmon, and then press ENTER to start System Monitor.
2. Click the plus sign (+) next to Performance Logs and Alerts to expand the tree.
3. Right-click the Alerts option, and then click New Alerts Settings.
4. In the New Alerts Settings dialog box, type a name for the new alert (for example, "Free Disk Space"), and then click OK.
5. In the next dialog box, type Monitors free disk space on logical drive in the Comment box on the General tab.

Select the Counters

1. Click Add to open the Select Counters dialog box.
2. Click Select Counters from computer, and then click your computer in the list.
3. In the Performance object box, click LogicalDisk.
4. Click Select Counter from list, and then click % Free Space.
5. Click Select interfaces from list, and then click the logical drive or volume that you want to monitor.
6. Click Add to add the counter, and then click Close to close the Select Counter dialog box.
7. On the General tab, click Under in the Alert when the value is box, and then set the Limit value to 1000 (1 megabyte).
8. Leave the Sample data interval value at the default value.
9. On the Action tab, click Log an entry in the application event log. Or, you can send a network message, start a performance data log, or run a program instead.
10. On the Schedule tab, set the time to start and stop the scan.
11. Click OK to save the alert and close the dialog box.

Troubleshooting

• After you have followed the steps in this article, monitoring starts at its scheduled time and sends alerts when the threshold is exceeded. However, the alert does not automatically restart after every reboot of the computer. To force the alert to restart after a reboot or after logging off and logging back on:
  1. Start System Monitor again, and open the properties of the alert that you created.
  2. On the Schedule tab, change the Stop scan option to After.
  3. Type a large number for the days to scan. The maximum value is 100,000.
  4. Click Start a new scan.
  The alert should run continuously, regardless of rebooting the computer, logging off and on, or the date.
  
  
• The LogicalDisk counters are not loaded automatically in Windows 2000. You must install them before you can track free disk space. Also, System Monitor does not display the LogicalDisk data for the fourth disk in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. Install the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0.
