SYMPTOMS

If you apply a heading style and a numbering format to text, and then insert a TOC field to create a table of contents, the number of the heading does not appear in the table of contents.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the text to which the heading style and numbering format are applied is followed by a style separator.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. On the Standard toolbar, click Show/Hide to reveal the formatting marks, if they are not already visible.
  2. Select only the paragraph mark at the end of a numbered heading that is not correctly displayed in the table of contents.
  3. Press ENTER to replace the selected paragraph mark with a new paragraph mark.

This eliminates the style separator at the end of the heading.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each heading that is not correctly displayed in the table of contents.
  5. Click in the middle of the table of contents to select that field.
  6. Press F9 to update the field. In the Update Table of Contents dialog box, click Update entire table, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 1. This problem was first corrected in the Microsoft Word 2002 Update: June 21, 2001.
