When you attempt to start Microsoft FrontPage, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
Cannot load c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\bin\fp4Awel.dll

Use the following methods, in the order listed, until you no longer receive the error message.

Method 1: Rename File and Use Detect and Repair

  1. NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  2. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  3. In the Search for files or folders named box, type FP4AWEL.DLL, and then click Search Now.
  4. If the file is found, right-click on each instance of the file in the Search Results box, click Rename, and then type fp4awel.old.
  5. Close the Search dialog box.
  6. Start FrontPage.
  7. On the Help menu, click Detect and Repair, and then follow the instructions on screen.
  8. Quit FrontPage, and then restart FrontPage.
If you receive the error message, proceed to Method 2.

Method 2: Install the Latest Server Extensions

You can update the Fpawel.dll file by installing the most recent FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions Server Release. For additional information about Server Extension Service Release 1.2, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
