FIX: Spanish VSwitch Causes Setup to Fail

SYMPTOMS

NOTE: This only applies to Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Spanish version.

The installation of the Spanish version of SQL Server 2000 may fail with the following error message:

"Se produjo un error que impide realizar un correcto cambio de version. Compruebe que el Editor del Registro, el Analizador de consultas e ISQL estan cerrados e intente ejecutar vswitch.exe de nuevo."

In English the text of the error message is:

"An error occurred which prevented a successful version switch. Please make sure the Registry Editor, Query Analyzer and ISQL are closed, and try running vswitch.exe again."

This error is raised from the vswitch utility and it causes the installation to fail.

A resource in the vswitch utility has been localized incorrectly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Hotfix

NOTE: The following hotfix was created prior to Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 2.

The Spanish version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

NOTE: Due to file dependencies, the most recent hotfix or feature that contains the above files may also contain additional files.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use these steps:

Copy the contents of the SQL Server 2000 Spanish CD to a local drive and path. For example C:\SS2000Install.
Copy the Vswitch.exe file from the US Edition of SQL Server 2000 into C:\SS2000Install\x86\Binn and overwrite the original file.
Install SQL Server 2000 from C:\SS2000Install.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server 2000 Spanish. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 2.
