IntelliMouse Optical: Cannot Install IntelliPoint Software

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft IntelliPoint Software, you receive one of the following error messages:
Microsoft IntelliPoint
Setup failed to launch installation engine:
Error loading type library/DLL.
-or-
Setup failed to launch installation engine.
Error loading type library/DLL.
-or-
Setup failed to launch installation engine. No such interface supported.
When you click OK, Setup quits.

CAUSE

This issue can occur when you are using the Microsoft Windows 98 operating system and the Stdole32.tlb file is damaged or missing.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of Stdole32.tlb from your Microsoft Windows CD to the Windows\System folder. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Quit all running programs.
  3. On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Run.
  4. In the Open box, type SFC, and then click OK.
  5. In the System File Checker dialog box, click Extract one file from installation disk.
  6. In the Specify the system file you would like to restore box, type Stdole32.tlb, and then click Start.
  7. In the Extract File dialog box, type drive:\Win98 in the Restore from box, where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that contains your Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM.

    NOTE: If your computer has an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) installation of Windows 98, the Windows installation files may also be found in the following folder:
    C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS
  8. In the Save file in box, type C:\Windows\System, and then click OK.
  9. In the Backup File dialog box, click OK. If you receive the following message:
    The backup folder does not exist. Do you want to create it?
    click Yes.
  10. You receive the following message:
    The file has been successfully extracted.
    Click Yes, and then click Close.
  11. Restart the computer.
  12. Install Microsoft IntelliPoint Software.
If the issue is not resolved, troubleshoot this issue further. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE. Note the programs that appear in the Close Program dialog box. If IKERNEL.EXE appears, click it, and then click End Task.
  3. Delete the contents of the Temp folder. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start Windows Explorer, and then navigate to the following folder:
      C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
    2. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
    3. On the File menu, click Delete. If you receive a Confirm Multiple File Delete message, click Yes. If you receive a Confirm File Delete message, click Yes to All.
    4. Quit Windows Explorer.
  4. Delete the Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Engine folder. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start Windows Explorer, and then navigate to the following folder:
      C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\engine
    2. Click the engine folder, and then on the File menu, click Delete. You receive the following message:
      Confirm Folder Delete
      click Yes.
    3. Quit Windows Explorer.
  5. Run the Microsoft Internet Explorer repair utility. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the taskbar, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    3. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click Microsoft Internet Explorer version and Internet Tools, and then click Add/Remove.
    4. In the Internet Explorer version and Internet Tools dialog box that appears, click Repair Internet Explorer, and then click OK.
    5. Click Yes to repair Internet Explorer.

      You receive the following message:
      You must restart Windows to complete the repair process.

      Do you want to restart now?
    6. Click No, and then click OK to quit the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box.
  6. Re-extract a new copy of the Stdole32.tlb file from the original Windows CD to the Windows\System folder.
  7. Restart the computer.
  8. Install Microsoft IntelliPoint Software.
