SYMPTOMS

When you make certain changes to the desktop, the screen may temporarily fade as if the computer is shutting down.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur while the computer is processing the changes to the desktop. The faded screen indicates that you cannot use any programs while Windows is updating the settings.
