SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Client Services for Netware (CSNW) does not use stored credentials in Windows XP. CSNW cannot store or retrieve credentials by using the Data Protection API (formerly known as Protected Store).

MORE INFORMATION

Windows will pass credentials that are typed at the logon prompt to both CSNW and the Client for Microsoft Networks. If the user name and password are the same in the Novell network and the Microsoft domain or workgroup, the user will enter their user and password once at logon and be able to access resources in both networks. If the user name or the password differ, the user will have to type both sets of credentials to access resources on both networks.

The Data Protection API provides secure storage of credentials that are encrypted in the user's profile. Users can manage their stored credentials by using the User Accounts tool in Control Panel.
