Cannot print a document from the "Open" dialog box

SYMPTOMS

You select a file in the Open dialog box in Microsoft Word. You then right-click the file, and then click Print on the shortcut menu. When you do this, you receive one of the following error messages, depending on which version of Word you are running.

Microsoft Word 2002

The command you selected is not available from this shortcut menu.

Microsoft Office Word 2003

The command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open. Click OK, and then close open dialog boxes to continue.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods:

In Word, open the document and then print it.
In Windows Explorer, select the document, right-click the file name, and then click Print on the shortcut menu.
