SYMPTOMS

While you are using the Exchange 2000 Server Instant Messaging client, a red "X" may be displayed over the Instant Messaging icon on the taskbar, which indicates that the session is logged off. After you attempt to log on to Exchange 2000 Instant Messaging again, you may receive the following error message:
Exchange Instant Messaging authentication failure. The person logged on to this computer does not have permission to use the specified e-mail address. Please supply an e-mail address and logon credentials for that address.
However, after some time passes, if you attempt to log on by using the same user name and password, you can log on successfully. This problem occurs only if Exchange 2000 Server and the Instant Messaging Service are installed on the same computer.
